Make 2019 your best year yet by living your values!
If you’re like many people, the arrival of a new year brings a vow to make some changes in your life. No matter what you are wanting to achieve in 2019, it is helpful to take an in-depth look at your values because they are the energy behind your aspirations and intentions.
Your values reflect what’s important to you – they’re a shorthand way of describing your motivations and they are automatically conveyed to the people you live and work with through your words, behaviours and actions.
Contrary to what many people believe, your values are not static. While some values like integrity and family may last a lifetime, others change to reflect where you’re at in life. For example, if you have a health scare, health and wellbeing may go straight to the top of your list of what’s most important to you, when previously it was something you took for granted.
Our personal values often change as we mature and transition through the various phases of life and it’s the same in organisations. Some of the values that drive a start-up, like entrepreneurship or financial stability, may evolve over time as the organisation grows and moves beyond survival mode.
Wherever you are in your journey, if your personal values and the values of your organisation aren’t aligned, you will be conflicted and your overall wellbeing, your relationships and work performance will suffer for it. Authentically connecting with your values will positively impact your ability to lead yourself and your organisation to greater success in 2019.
Self-awareness is key, so take this FREE online Personal Values Assessment (PVA). It takes about 5 minutes to complete and measures your values, revealing the huge impact they have on your life and work.
To better understand the connection between personal and organisational values I recommend you watch this short video Bringing Personal Values to Work by values and culture expert, Richard Barrett.
If you want to further explore your values and how they influence your behaviour at work, send me an email and we can make a time to talk.
All the best for a happy, healthy and productive 2019! If you’re determined to make some changes for the better, I hope you take this valuable opportunity to reflect on your values and what is most important to you.
